Robert Brandy’s garage-cum-studio is such a visually enriching experience that it is a journey in itself. Miniature cars, enamel signs and vintage cans stand alongside magnificently coloured canvases, paint brushes of all sizes and pots of intensely coloured pigments. The visitor’s eye is constantly captivated by the abundance of the place.

The artist gave us a warm welcome in this haven of peace and creativity that reflects him so well. During a pleasant discussion, we covered the highlights of his life and career, evoking the importance of human relationships and sources of inspiration, the places he finds revitalising, and of course, his passion for cars.

I’m Robert Brandy, a freelance painter, and I’ve been doing this for 50 years.

A great opportunity to (re)focus on the major role played by Robert Brandy in the story of art in Luxembourg. He was a pioneer of the professionalisation of independent artists at a key period in the development of the art sector.

From the start, he developed a marked taste for the physicality of an art work: He plays with objects, canvases and colours, as he constantly explores the relationship between the medium and the surface. His creations overturn the traditional logic of perception, muddying the links between cause and effect, space and production. Robert Brandy has gained international recognition over the years.

25 years after his “Autoportrait” exhibition, Robert Brandy has a new exhibition at BIL’s Galerie L’Indépendance. The exhibition, which is entitled “Passé, Présent, Futur” and runs until April 2025,

comprises previously unseen pieces from the artist’s personal collection and works from the bank’s private collection. It invites the visitor on a journey through time, retracing Brandy’s career and helping us understand the development of his artistic language – from its beginnings through to today.
